My parents used to say I should be a politician. I think it was mostly because I always had an answer for everything, always wanted the last word, and generally thought I was right.
I was never interested in politics.
But then as I became more and more interested in everything else, I started to discover that I really am interested in politics: just under a different name. I'm definitely a fan of astuteness in practical matters! I'm interested in relationships, communication, human interaction...
In his book The Five Dysfunctions of a Team, Patrick Lencioni (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patrick_Lencioni ) writes, "Politics is when people choose their words and actions based on how they want others to react rather than based on what they really think".
That strikes me as a definition that really cuts to the heart of the matter.
So the challenge for me is to seek prudence in practical matters, and to remember to choose the words and actions that honour who I really am rather than seeking to manipulate my audience...
