the thesis: what it's all about... part 2

Continuing from part 1 of my thesis: what it's all about...

what, no love??

The Dread Pirate (Wesley) Roberts & Buttercup in The Princess Bride
Fairytale True Love
it took me a while to realise that Love was missing from my list of what it's all about (freedom, perspective, relationship, communication, identity); and to (re?)-discover in my mind what my heart has known for so long: the simple powerful centrality of True Love.

i think perhaps i intentionally excluded the word love in my original list because of it being such a complex topic, but in any case, there's no point hiding from the facts: it's all about Love!

the revised version

so after much musing in quiet meditative moments alone and plenty of bouncing around of ideas in pub conversations with those that do me the honour of joining in my incessant ponderings, i finally came up with...

…a diagram!
5 concentric rings, captioned from the innermost: identity, perspective, communication, relationship, love
what it's all about!

a wise friend commented after a first glance at all this, "you could spend a long long time re arranging the order"... that was a relief, because i have, but next time i'll try to explain in a bit more detail why i think the diagram has everything in just the right place!

what, no freedom??

Mel Gibson in Braveheart, leading the people to fight for their freedom
Freedom!
whilst freedom is no longer explicitly listed, it's no less one of the main motivating factors of my life. after some consideration, however, it seems to me that freedom is more of a state of being than one of these interconnected elements.  freedom is a lot to do with perspective.  and perspective is a lot to do with freedom.

in my first draft, regarding freedom i wrote, "i reckon life is all about freedom because i don't believe there's anything more precious than true freedom. and i don't believe most people find it. i reckon lots of people have given up believing in it; and lots of people have forgotten or never realised that it's what they really want. but without real freedom, life will never be everything we're looking for."

i think i would now rewrite that under the elements of perspective and love:
  • i reckon life is all about perspective because there's not a lot that's more transforming than an unchained perspective.  and i don't believe most people find that.
  • i reckon life is all about love because i don't believe there's anything more precious than true love.  and i don't believe most people find it.  i reckon lots of people have given up believing in it; and lots of people have forgotten or never realised that this is what they really want.  but without true love, life will never be everything we're looking for.
i figure a thesis on a blog is flexible enough to change, but for now, freedom is out of the limelight, but still lurking around every corner!

the simple facts

it's all about love.  and the only way to find love is in relationship.  and relationships are built on communication.  and all our communications are influenced by our perspective. and our perspective is developed by our inner sense of identity.

so it seems to me that one reason we keep asking ourselves questions like, "who am i?" and "why am i here?" is that we're subconsciously aware that without straightening out the question of our identity, everything else risks getting skewed...
